For most people, Commodore means the C64, the Amiga, affordable home computing, excellent custom chips and the kind of power supply you still eye suspiciously before plugging in. But in the mid 1980s Commodore also had a very different machine on the bench: the Commodore 900, also known as the C900 or Z-Machine. It was not a games computer, not a colourful home machine, and not a direct follow-up to the C64. It was a business workstation built around the Zilog Z8001 processor and designed to run Coherent, a UNIX-like operating system. In another timeline, Commodore might have entered the workstation market before the Amiga became its next great identity. In our timeline, the Commodore 900 became one of the most fascinating almost-products in computer history. |
