What happened to AmigaDE? Inside Amiga’s failed portable platform: The oddest Amiga ever launched was not a computer. It did not come in a case. {...} AmigaDE was something else. It was a software layer, a runtime, a business plan and a brand exercise rolled into one. Later pushed as Amiga Anywhere, it tried to take the Amiga name away from the idea of a specific computer and attach it to portable applications running across different devices. That made it one of the most revealing products in the long post-Commodore Amiga story. It showed a company trying to move the brand into the device era, but also showed how hard it is to make an old computer name mean something new when the machine itself has disappeared. The hook was brutal because it was true: the brand survived by leaving the machine behind. |
