It was called the MindLight. The MindLight 7 connects directly to the Amiga’s 2nd joystick port — and listens through either its built-in microphone, or through a stereo mini-jack that feeds it music, speech, or can receive even video input. Inside, the hardware translates frequencies into digital data vibrations become numbers, numbers become movement. From this exchange, the Amiga begins to visualize sound.

   - Greetings and salutations everyone! As happens from time to time I have somehow overlooked another long time Amiga group. Kickstart Amiga User Group, which has been around since 1997, has quite an impressive history. So you owe it to yourself to drop by the website or better yet, if you happen to be anywhere close to Ottershaw Village Hall, Brox Road, Ottershaw, Surrey, KT16 0HG, you need to drop by for one of their summer BBQ meets or one of their other festive events!

Interesting... Keep an eye on
  • I know this was at a recent Kickstart Amiga User Group event but three weeks ago at their first Kickstart event of 2026 they showcased project. Behold the 1084sx retro monitor project. From a thread over at lemmonamiga.org newdles says "This is a first prototype - 15" 4:3 IPS XGA panel with HMDI, VGA, Composite & BNC inputs, stereo speakers to come... 12VDC powered, and features a shallower desk footprint than the real 1084, to allow for more rear cabling access, compactness, while keeping the authentic 1084 shape vibe." I for one like it and hope to see more of it in the future... Hopefully with a 19" screen.
  • Crowdfunding: Bootblock Rebels hit is goal with 3 weeks to go. So if you haven't got your copy you still have some time.

  • Kickstart Amiga User Group: Kickstart is an Amiga user group, formed in December 1997 by Rob Gilbert. We are a user group for all Amiga users, or those just wanting to know more about the platform. It doesn’t matter if you are an expert with every machine in the range, or just a single computer owner trying to learn more or just having fun with a 500 Mini, everyone is welcome at one of our meets and as members of the group. For everyone looking to learn or needing help with a problem, we’ll have someone who can share their knowledge with you. It’s all part of the fun with the Amiga!
  • Data Formats: 3D, Audio, Image: The following are largely my personal collection of references to a range of data formats in use in the computer industry, some are just copies of manuals and documentation, others are my own investigations and associated reports. The largest section is on 3D geometric formats, but there are also notes on image formats, conventions and other miscellaneous data representation topics. {Over 140+ data formats and 20+ image formats covered}
  • Early Amiga 3D: At some point, I want to say something about early 3D on the Amiga, particularly my own experience. For now, enjoy the screen shots (links on the right) of some of the programs I used.
  • POV: The Persistence of Vision Raytracer is a high-quality, Free Software tool for creating stunning three-dimensional graphics. The source code is available for those wanting to do their own ports.
  • The Early History of POV-Ray: OK, here's a not-so brief history of POV-Ray (from the horse's mouth, so to speak): Back in 1986 or so, I had an Amiga. A friend who also has an Amiga downloaded the C code for a raytracer for Unix from the Internet and brought it over. I thought it looked interesting and I ported it to the Amiga and wrote the drivers to display it with Amiga graphics. The program only rendered untextured spheres with a planar floor in black and white, but I was still impressed by it. I played with it a bit adding support for color, but I eventually decided that I could do a better job writing a raytracer from scratch, so I scrapped the C program and started my own - DKBTrace had begun.
  • Animating the Amiga: The Untold Story of Aegis Animator: Introduction: When the Amiga Brought Pixels to Life. On the screen of a beige Commodore Amiga, a small cat takes a confident stroll across a blank grey floor. The animation lasts only a few seconds. Yet ElGato.anim—a looping demo from the late 1980s—captures everything magical about the Amiga: colour, motion, and personality on a home computer that felt alive. To anyone who saw it, that walking cat was proof that computers could do more than calculate—they could create.
  • Aegis Animator: Aegis Animator is an early paint and animation package, written by Jim Kent and published by Aegis Development. From the packaging: "Aegis Animator will turn your Amiga computer into a full function animation workstation capable of creating any type of moving computer/video storyboard. Designed for use by the graphics professional, artist, video post production company, or the Amiga hobbiest, Aegis Animator makes use of a unique process called "tweening" which allows movement and change within each segment of the animation. "
  • The LaST Upgrade - FAKE 060 CPU : 68060 fake rev6. Warning, it seems that there is more false 68060 rev6 (maskset 71E41J) on the Asian market! I just received a package that contained three! Arg! In fact they are sometimes 68LC060 rev4 (LC = Low Cost = no Fpu): Some people have scratched the initial registration and then re-printed with 68060 in 71E41J corner ... The purpose of this article is to show you the true and false, to be sure of your future purchases!

  • Best Amiga Available in 2026: You’re interested in getting an Amiga setup for gaming and demo scene use in 2026. What’s the best option? This comparison focuses on Amiga gaming and demo scene use in 2026, not nostalgia alone. Our criteria prioritize timing correctness, input/output latency, video and audio fidelity, and long-term practicality — as well as overall delight and fun. Productivity software, AmigaOS “daily driving”, and historical collecting value are intentionally out of scope.
  • The ultimate in undocumented jumper settings: {Thread @ Vogons.org} Back in 1994, I had remembered reading a newsgroup message quoting Dave Haynie:- "NEVER EVER mess with a PCB jumper you don't understand, even if it's labelled 'Sex and Free Beer'". So, I decided to implement this on the AD0200 ZorroII board (see above)...
  • Austex Software {ARCHIVED 6 Feb 2005}: Austex Software was formed in 1990 by Stephen J. Smith and Paul N. Goulding. As Amiga fans, they started writing demos and software for this platform. In December 1990, the demo disk Genesis was released. Included on the disk was the game Nebula, which managed to appear a year later on some magazine cover disks. Work then progressed on the game Uropa2 which was first released as shareware in 1996 and then published in 1997 by Vulcan Software. During this period, I was designing and programming various Amiga related hardware for use within the university where I worked (archived).
  • DAVE HAYNIE'S Museum of Amiga Hardware: {Thread @ lemmonamiga.com} Due to circumstances beyond our control, the legend icon of the Amiga Hazy Dave Haynie is SELLING some good stuff on ebay. Dave also wrote a lot of info about each item, and as this info would be lost as soon as ebay listings go six months out of date, this is the only place this info will be available after the sale.

   - Greatings and salutations everyone! As a LONG TIME Lightwave 3D owner & user I'm happy to see it still around. Back in 2019 NewTek joined forces with Vizrt and looks to be 'no more'. Sad to see one of the last OG Amiga companies become almost non-existent but a quick check at the other site not only shows it still around but still kicking ass!

   While you're there check out the WONDERFUL HISTORY page going all the way back to the beginning with VideoScape 3D and Aegis Modeler 3D. Lots of screenshots of ALL the versions are shown.

   I reached out and thanked them for not forgetting us. They replied "we love the Amiga; I think all of us had one. Most started their LightWave journey on that most excellent machine". What a bunch of good eggs!! I've always found it sad when a companies history page pretends like the Amiga never existed. Looking at you the 'no longer around' Caligari 3D.

   I did ask if they happen to have any of the old source code lying around. "Amiga 5.x LightWave. So sorry to say that code is lost to the ages. I know that there are still 'back alley' versions that are still out and passed around, but as far as doing anything native to the 68K Motorola is just out of the question for many reasons, most you probably can guess." SHUCKS!! LOL

   On the plus side they said if you can prove that you own "any" version of LightWave you can get the upgrade pricing. Time to finally move on from v4.0 to LightWave 2026. ;-)

  - Also... GO HAWKS!! You did it!!! Seahawks Logo

  • Here's the first real print review, in French, of the Apollo A6000 I've come across. Not a bad system but no necessarily what's going to bring us back from the brink of doom yet. On the plus side they're excited to announce that batch #3 is officially available for pre-order.
  • New issue: Compute!'s Gazette #8 has been published
  • New event: This years European Vintage Computer Festival (VCFe) is being held in Munich on 1-3 March. If it's anything like the shows here in the US it will be a GREAT TIME!!
  • New event: Here's another event in Germany. Amiga Ruhrpott Convention #4 being held in Duisburg-Rheinhausen is billed as "user meeting for fans, organised by fans, with all the charm of a scene party in your living room". Now this sounds like fun too!

  • AmigaBasic ACE: ACE - Amiga BASIC Compiler. ACE is a complete BASIC compiler for the Amiga computer platform. It compiles BASIC source code into native Amiga executables by generating Motorola 68000/68020 assembly code, bridging BASIC's ease of use with compiled performance.
  • Amiga Input To USB: The purpose of this project is to make and document a small, inexpensive device that you can use to hook up some Commodore Amiga and Atari input peripherals to modern computers with USB inputs. It presents itself to the modern host computer as a HID USB keyboard and HID USB mouse.
  • AmigaSchematics: This project contains some schematics that I've reproduced from various sources that are otherwise not available. They have been made using KiCad 4.0.7 on my Mac, although they should load in KiCad 4 on any platform. The projects included here are: A500_kyb_Mitsumi - Amiga 500 keyboard with Mitsumi board. • The dream machine that almost was: inside the ambitious vision of the Amiga MCC: In the late 1990s, the computer industry was in the middle of a transformation. Multimedia computing was no longer experimental, the internet was becoming a household utility, and manufacturers were beginning to imagine the home computer not simply as a productivity device but as the central hub of digital life. Into this rapidly evolving landscape stepped an ambitious and now legendary project: the Amiga Multimedia Convergence Computer, better known as the Amiga MCC.

  • AMIGA UNIX. Another Commodore Fail!: Did you know that Amiga can run UNIX? Yes it can! A special port of UNIX named Amiga UNIX or AMIX, was ported by Commodore to the Amiga machines. Even if Unix was a master of Operating Systems, it was a commercial fail on the Commodore Amiga: it is complex and useless! Who wanted to use an Amiga as a network muti-user server? Here I show a brief panoramic of how it works, and a complete tutorial to install it on Amiga Emulator WinUAE.

Looks like another good read. You have some time to show your support but don't wait to long! Times up 14 Mar 26.

  • Bringing Git to AmigaOS 4: the long road to a working client : When I started this effort, the goal was simple: get a recent Git client running on AmigaOS 4 with the least amount of friction. The reality was a tour through toolchains, libraries, Installer scripts, encoding quirks, and platform constraints. Here’s the full story and what it took to get there.
  • The new Amiga. McEwen and Moss discuss the renaissance of the Amiga SDK {ARCHIVED 21 Aug 2001}: The original Amiga computer was a major technological innovation in its time. Now, the Amiga is back. Bill McEwen, President of Amiga, Inc., and Fleecy Moss, VP of Development, interviewed by Daniel Robbins, give us insight into new Amiga and explain why it's one of the most exciting development platforms available today.
  • Filesysbox: Filesysbox.library is a FUSE compatible file system layer originally developed by Leif Salomonsson. It manages locks, notifications, file handles, packets, update timeouts and more, freeing the file system of these jobs. Version 0.730 of the library was released as open source and was used as a basis for this version. The included FbxDismount command can be used to cleanly unmount FUSE file systems even if there are outstanding locks/notify requests.
  • Roguecraft DX: Roguecraft DX is an award-winning, retro-inspired, turn-based roguelike that’s all about simplicity and fun. Explore procedurally generated dungeons laden with mysterious potions, scary chickens, and secret rooms just waiting to be discovered. The Amiga version presented here is a "WHDLoad" package intended for emulators and Amigas with WHDLoad capability.
  • Transmeta Crusoe CPU: Transmeta may be most notable today for its $273 million IPO on Nov 7, 2000 being the last successful tech IPO until the Google IPO in 2004. But on January 19, 2000, Transmeta’s big news was its new Crusoe CPU. {...} Transmeta wanted to take a different approach than more traditional Intel competitors like AMD or Cyrix or Rise, the technology behind the Vortex86. {...} They would design a very efficient CPU, and in theory, they could place any translation layer in front of it that they wanted. Emulating PowerPC or ARM would have been possible if they saw the need to do it, and, indeed, they floated the idea of emulating PowerPC, MIPS, and Alpha in addition to x86.
  • PicoIDE: PicoIDE is an open-source IDE/ATAPI drive emulator that replaces aging hard drives and CD-ROM drives in vintage computers with solid-state microSD card storage. Simply put your disc/disk images on a microSD card and swap between them as needed. Powered by open-source hardware and software, PicoIDE means you no longer have to deal with burning optical discs, worn out lasers, crashed heads, or bad sectors.
  • AmigaGuide Viewer: This app allows you to load and view Amiga-specific files, like AmigaGuide files, Amiga Autodoc files, and IFF/ILBM images. {ms store}
  • Small games, big impact: the 40 year legacy of sensible software: There’s a certain feeling you get when you load up an old Sensible Software game. It hits almost immediately. Within seconds, you know what you’re doing. Your hands understand the controls before your brain has finished catching up. You smile—not because the graphics are impressive or because the game is explaining itself well, but because it simply feels right. That feeling didn’t happen by accident.
  • Scala Multimedia on the Commodore Amiga: It's no Toaster, but it doesn't need to be to hold its own. Possibly one of the most impressive cover disk giveaways in history? {...} From the States, cross either ocean and Scala was everywhere, including a full, physical-dongle-copy-protection-removed, copy distributed on the cover disk of CU Amiga Magazine, issue 96. Listening to Scala founder, Jon Bøhmer, speak of Scala's creation in an interview on The Retro Hour, his early intuition on the Amiga's potential in television production built Scala into an omnipresent staple across multiple continents.

  • Gary Peake Speaks from the Heart: I do not want to ruffle feathers, but someone eventually has to say this. In every field today (especially in computers) there have been tremendous advances made over the last ten years. Ten years ago, we were looking at Pentium 100's or less. There were only a very few, very expensive alternatives to the regular tungsten light bulb for the home, energy consumption in cars was measured in less than 15 miles per gallon. For the computer industry, computing nearly doubles every 18 months. A "generation" in this business is about 18 months long. Ten years is almost 6 generations ago.
  • Amiga Flame Interview with Gary Peake, Director of Amiga's Support Program: It is vital that software developers become involved in Amiga's Support Program and so it seemed only logical to contact the man in charge, Gary Peake and find more about this Support Program.
  • Gary Peake discusses Amiga Inc's latest plans {ARCHIVED 09 Feb 2022}: {Holy crap... What a snapshot of the times back in the Apr 2001. It's hard to wrap your head around the plans laid out here and where we are today. Where did it ALL go so WRONG!! Two completely alternate timelines!}
